Clerical Officers Tipped On Their Role in Handling SGBV Cases

In efforts to improve access to Justice for Refugee Host Communities, the Judicial Training Institute in conjunction with European Union has commenced the training of Clerical Officers from the Northern Region in interpretation skills with focus on Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) cases and family-related conflict.
The two-day training which is taking place at Desert Breeze Hotel in Arua District is running under the theme: Improving Access to Justice for Refugee Host Communities in Northern Uganda.
It is a drive to raise awareness on the specific needs of refugees in the justice system and making recommendations on steps needed towards the realization of justice for victims of SGBV in Uganda.
Hon. Lady Justice Damalie N Lwanga, the Executive Director JTI said Court Clerical Officers and interpreters play a vital role in the delivery of Justice, and in access to Justice.
She said that the training was timely and would also benefit the Judicial Officers with whom they work.
Hon. Lady Justice Lwanga also informed the participants that SGBV is a subject of great concern in Uganda because of its prevalence and its effects on the victims, majority of whom are women and children.
She advocated for the need of continuous trainings and skilling to be able to handle cases involving refugees and host communities which involve certified vulnerable persons for gender related reasons.
The Executive Director extended gratitude to the European Union for funding the workshop and urged participants to actively participate and share experiences.
The Resident Judge Arua, Hon. Justice Acellam Collins urged the participants to acquire as much knowledge in order to "effectively be the voice of the people you interact with".
The training is covering different facets including; Understanding domestic violence, Conduct, Ethics and Docorum of a Clerical Officers in Judicial Service, psychological and psychological needs of survivors of SGBV in Displacement Environment, among others.
The Institute's Registrar, HW Mary Kaitesi is moderating the training.
